Approximate Blade Area Calculation

Not all manufacturers provide a paddle blade area as part of the specifications of their paddles.  We believe it is a simple measure that allows a quick comparison between blades and can help in narrowing down the search.

For the paddles we sell that the manufacturer does not provide this measure, we calculate it by: 

  1. Weighing a piece of cardboard of known area,
  2. Tracing out the blade shape onto the cardboard,
  3. Cutting it out, 
  4. Weighing the cut-out, and
  5. Applying the conversion factor (known area / weight from step 1 above).

Whilst this is not the only factor to be considered when considering a new paddle, we feel it is a factor that allows better comparison between the many paddles currently available on the market.  Other factors to be considered include shaft flex, blade stiffness, swing weight, paddle length, adjustability, durability. 

As with many other aspects of paddling it is ultimately a matter of personal preference.
